Monchi’s Men: Migration and Name

Alright everyone.  Well, we’ve always intended for this to be a participatory site/community for English speaking Sevilla fans.  It’s been fantastic seeing how rapidly this site has grown and the amazing quality of commenters’ contributions as well as the ever increasing quantity of participants.

We think it may be time to migrate the site to a new location with its own domain name (and hopefully with added features like a discussion board or other such things).  In light of that, maybe it is time to also change the name.  I am a big fan of Monchi (Ramón Rodríguez Verdejo) and part of why I liked this team was seeing how they seemed to find undervalued players and turn them into stars (one of the things I enjoy about rooting for a medium sized team versus a team that just buys the player of the year every year or snatches away stars who emerge on other teams).  But that said, Monchi might not always be with this team, though he has forever given us the club’s best run in history.

How do the rest of you feel about the name “Monchi’s Men”?  It was something I just happened to come up with on an impulse when I first opened this WordPress site and never really thought very hard about how long it would last or whether it was “the perfect name”.  That said, I’ve come to sort of like it and now it has become, to some degree, established.

What do you all think?  Any new name suggestions?  Like the old name?

We would love (with Chris Lail’s help) to get a new site up and running before our first real games of the season begin.

Please put your feedback in the comments.

  1. It will be difficult to find a better name than Monchi’s Men. Go for it and good luck, hope I can help with something.

    • tim. the quality of your contributions to these comments are already a huge help. but yes, we’ll want the site to be as open and participatory as possible.

  2. Monchi’s men would be fine with me. Even the ultras Biris got the name after the player Biri Biri, even though he is gone, he’s never forgotten. That way I see Monchi, Del Nido or Juande Ramos, they’re forever with us in history.

As for the new web, forum and everything else, maybe it is time considering all that you mentioned, the growth of the community, the comments etc.

I would be glad to help with something if needed. Best of luck.

    • shendm, i can/will/would/do say the same to you that i said above to tim. immense appreciation to all of you who know and understand football far better than myself and who have contributed so much to this site.

      • Thanks a lot Rene. Anytime for Sevillistas and Sevilla.

Our knowledge for this sport in general is far better than the fans of the big teams, always cheering for their stars and going crazy if they don’t win titles each season. We intend to go more in-depth for this sport, and the passion for the club will not leave us aside the financial analyzing, cantera, pre-season and official matches, training, transfer market etc. It is like we are playing a managerial game, where everyone’s intention is to see the team better and better each day, each month, each season.

We are all alike in this case, because we support an exotic and cute club like Sevilla, with who we will stay forever to good and worse.

I would like to warmly greet all Sevillistas with this post, especially those who contribute to this blog constantly, and hope to one day meet some of you in private as well.

Thank you for making it a beautiful place to be !

It’ll always be Monchi’s Men to me.

  4. I think that settles it. 🙂 Monchi’s Men it is. I shall get started next week. 🙂

  5. Update: I purchased the domain and installed wordpress. We are now ready for the migration. To do this I will need Admin rights to the current version so I can export. Let me know when you are ready to do that.

Alright Crhis, you’ve been adminned. Thanks again for stepping up!

    • Nice one. Forgive me presenting more issues, because first things first. I suppose that it will look the just same at first – just a new domain sat on a new server. I’d very much like to see some bigger photo/avatars like you see on hastalamuerte.net. Not that I don’t like present ones, I could come up with a selection for people to chose from. I’d also like to see an embedded twitter feed so that we can seen the news arrive in realtime and we won’t have to leave Monchis Men, just open the links in new windows.

we’ll probably play with the layout, but there’s always been a twitter feed on the right there under “recien dicho”.

I agree, it wouldn’t be the same without Monchis Men..

  7. Back to the football briefly, another reason to see the sale of Negredo and Navas positively, the attacking options we now have seem almost endless, this could not happen with Negredo and Navas who have to play and have to play their normal position.

It’s already clear that Bacca and Marin combine very well, Jairo pops up everywhere in attack plus Vitolo and we have yet to integrate Rabello into that. With a permutation of Rakitic, Perotti and Reyes linking up with the attack it looks powerful.

Rene, I like the name Monchis Men. If it was like you say, starting the blog was due to the success under SFC, down to Monchis many incredible unknown signings that turned little known Sevilla into a truly European force then I think it wouldnt be right the change the name.

As a minor suggestion, is it an idea to have the name of Monchis Men for the site. Then underneath a tagline saying..A Global / International Portal for all English Speaking Sevillistas (or words to that effect)? It just may capture more Seville fans? I see plenty of other nationality Sevillstas on Twitter.

    • glad you’re happy with the name. and to answer your second question. the title right now is: “Monchi’s Men | A Sevilla FC Supporters Blog”

that seem OK? it could possibly be changed to be more explicit in saying “An English Language Sevilla FC Supporters Blog” but that seems a little obvious given that the rest of the phrase is in English….

No worries Rene, all ok, take your point etc. Cheers

  11. Hey guys. Quick status update:
    1) Domain is up and live (you can visit and give feedback)
    2) WordPress is installed
    3) A Theme I own is installed
    4) I created a new Monchi’s Men Logo (starting point)
    5) The migration is complete
    6) User Roles have been assigned

    Things still left to do:
    1) Finish user setup
    2) Finish styling and setting up the theme
    3) Figure out what we want on the front page (for now, just the blog)
    4) General Cleanup and roll out

  12. Great, you see straight away that the text area is wider, and it squeezes if you narrow the browser (768-1024px) .

The top of the page needs to sing and dance, contain a lot of colour, images, logos etc plus a few keywords like Nervion, Sanchez Pizjuan, Sevilla Football Club. I be happy to do some arty banners for you to consider.

  13. New website is looking nicely so far. However, can we log-on there on our wordpress accounts for posting, since it seems we need to fill out the user details every time we post from the new web.

Tonight’s match, up until early morning (2:30 AM kick-off in my zone). Should be an interesting one against Atletico Nacional, let’s see what we produce.

  14. Yes Tim, the new site will be fully responsive. If you pull it up on a cell phone it should look very nice. I will be modifying the front page to be more descriptive of what the site is about adding a slider and such for SEO purposes. I would love for some help with some graphics. I’ll have to see which slider we want to go with and I will get you the dimensions at that time.

    Shendm,
I hope to have the users solved tonight. The site will allow all users to register when I enable that, so that you will not have to do anything other than login. I’m hoping I can find a plugin that will utilize the WordPress.com user names.

I hope the site will be fully functional by this weekend. I’ll keep everyone posted and will make an announcement when we are ready to start posting on the new site.

Chris, I dont know how to view it?

  16. Botia’s loan is without a buying option, a winning situation for us and we know why already. Still worried about the Marin’s case though…. silly move, but then Mourinho is not that stupid.

  17. Mark

Hi Chris, great layout. Looks really good. Many thanks for this, Cheers

  18. If you guys will. Head over to MonchisMen.com and try to comment on a few items. I think we have the user integration working.

    • timspence1

I can’t login with wordpress but it’s a new account I just created, I can log in and out of wordpress on their site though and it seems to recognize me here OK

  19. timspence1

The new site looks great Chris, there’s some nice little touches.

  20. timspence1

Still can’t login on the new site Chris.
