El Desmarque reports that we signed Hedwiges Maduro for three years. I think he was injured last year as he only played a handful of games for Valencia. He’s 6’1″ central defender. I guess he was called in to the Dutch preliminary Euro 2012 team but didn’t make the final cut. transfermarkt values him at 2.5-3 million euros. But no report of what we’re paying.
Anyone know much more?
This seems like a solid signing… But hard to say I guess. Still no news on Spahic? What does this mean for Fazio?

His contract was expired and comes on a free. They’ve signed him with the idea that he plays DM not CB. The deal took 15 days to complete, although SFC has been following him since before Valencia signed him.
so you think this has implications for medel? or an insurance option?
I would assume that it’s more of an insurance option (he can also play at CB). If he spent most of last season injured I doubt he’s ready to replace Medel (as long as he stays).
Anyway, nice to see that we can still lure players away from Valencia..
Valencia fan here, all I can say is thanks god he is gone. Don’t get me wrong he is a nice chap, but he has no creativity, he is very slow, too slow to be an effective shield for the back four.
In his time at Valencia he was never used, except when we had long term injuries in defence or defensive midfield positions. The offer to renew was at significantly reduced wages and also to enable a sale rather than free transfer.
So Seville did not get one over on Valencia, Maduro was never going to be part of Valencia next year. Now Dealbert is available on a free, do you lot want to sign him as well? Ha!!
thanks for the insight. do you think he was so slow because of injury? should we have any reason for optimism? or is he just a slow dude.
a DM who cant cover the pitch isnt much use. you can get away with it a little more for a CB, but yeah, there’s a reason he’s a free transfer and we’re not paying much for him.
hopefully he either exceeds expectations, or he just fills in when others arent available.
ps. i should just say that ive gotta give it up for los che. i dont like them. but they are so damn consistent no matter who they’ve lost for the last bunch of years. yes, many on these boards would (rightfully) say that we’d have an easier time replicating their success with some extra TV revenues, but still you have to tip your cap a little, since they have actually done it. the same cant be said for a certain pAtetic outfit based out of madrid who enjoys the same fiscal advantage.
Valencia fan again.
Maduro isn’t the most mobile bloke, but what he lacks in skill, technique and speed he makes up with determination. He will not complain and will play wherever the coach decides, he even played at right back to cover injuries a few seasons ago.
He is not better than Gary Medel- who I personally rate very highly, but he will be adequate cover. Speaking objectively he is not a spectacular singing, but an adequate one. He will not stand out, he will blend in only surfacing when needed.
He always gets called to the provisional Dutch quad but never makes the final cut, except- you guessed it ,to cover injuries.
Hey, great job with the blog. It’s been awhile since I’ve been happy to read about Sevilla. I don’t see how Maduro could make us any more boring than we were last season, so here’s hoping for the best from him.
haha! true. thanks for coming by… hopefully this offseason and coming season can give us reason to find some more enthusiasm for this team than the last year did.
